More than just a day off or an excuse to barbecue.

Freedom isn't free and it isn't cheap.  Throughout the history of our nation, thousands and thousands of soldiers died defending our freedom.  My grandfather Henry fought in World War II in the Navy and his ship got hit by a kamikaze Japanese plane.  He survived that crash but many of his friends and fellow soldiers lost their lives in that war.  He later died from particles of that plane that remained in him from the war traveling down near his heart giving him a heart attack.

All of us know or are related to someone who is serving or who has served in the military.  I have several friends and family members who fight bravely each day defending our freedoms and I'm so thankful for them.  That is why today we must take the time to thank God for their bravery and sacrifice, to remember the lives lost making our country great and keeping it free.  I am so thankful for all the brave servicemen and women who put their lives on the line.

Today is so much more than a day for going to the beach or barbecuing.

God bless the USA!

Just a treat....

Saturday, May 26, 2012

I just got this trio in the mail yesterday and I have to say I love it.  If you like coconut but don't want something that smells sickeningly sweet, this will be perfect for you.  The mixture of vanilla and coconut is subtle enough to not make you feel sick if you're sensitive to strong scents but fragrant enough for you to be able to enjoy the summery scent as your skin gets a moisturizing treat.

I'm going to use this more and do a full review on how it affects your skin after using it for a week or more every day.  I hope you're all having a wonderful weekend!!

Another reason to really read the labels on your food before you eat it!!

Thursday, May 24, 2012

I read this article and had to share. It's so important to read our food labels to know what we are really consuming!!

Article courtesy of Daily Mail

Does sugar make you stupid? Study suggests it sabotages learning and memory

  • Fructose is commonly added to processed foods such as soft drinks

  • It was found to hamper memory and slow brain activity

Stay off the sweet stuff: Fizzy drinks contain high amounts of fructose which slows the brain
Stay off the sweet stuff: Fizzy drinks contain high amounts of fructose which slows the brain
Too much sugar could be making you stupid, according to researchers.
The suggestion follows tests in the laboratory comparing high-fructose corn syrup, which is six times sweeter than cane sugar and a common ingredient in processed foods, with omega-3 fatty acids, known to aid memory and learning.
In an experiment on rats, one group had a sugary diet for six weeks and another was fed healthily.
At the start of the study, published in the Journal of Physiology, the  University of California team tested how well the rats navigated a maze – placing landmarks to help them learn the way.
Six weeks later, the researchers tested the rats’ ability to recall the route.
Study co-author Professor Fernando Gomez-Pinilla said the rats fed just a sugary diet were slower and their brains had declined.
He said: 'Eating a high-fructose diet over the long term alters your brain’s ability to learn and remember information.
However, the good news is that eating nuts and fish such as salmon can counteract this disruption.
'Our findings illustrate that what you eat affects how you think,' said Prof Gomez-Pinilla. 'Adding omega-3 fatty acids to your meals can help minimise the damage.'
While earlier research has revealed how fructose harms the body through its role in diabetes, obesity and fatty liver, this study is the first to uncover how the sweetener influences the brain.
The researchers were studying the impact of high-fructose corn syrup on rats, who have similar brain chemistry to humans.

Throwback Thursday

It's Thursday and I'm exhausted from a grueling and long day yesterday to why not post old pictures of me from way back in the day?  :o)

When I was little, there were a few things I loved other than my parents and my brother:  glitter, Barbies, dolls, toys, Rainbow Brite, and princesses.  I was obsessed with pink and purple and even had my mom paint my room bright Easter egg purple.  It actually was a pretty shade and even now my love for purple remains as my room is a very pale shade of lavender.

As I look at these old photos I can remember the moments that they were taken for pretty much every single photo.  Not that impressive since I have a photographic memory but nonetheless, the memories are fond ones.  I think the only photos I don't remember taking are the ones where I'm a baby with my parents and with my great grandmother (obviously I couldn't remember being a baby!! haha).

I hope you all have made it over the mid-week hump in one piece and are looking forward to the weekend as much as I am.  My son's last day of 4th grade is today and he is so excited as am I to get his summer vacation started!!

These photos captured wonderful days and moments in my life and I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoy sharing them.  Share your old photos with me!!! Write a post and link it to me in the comments below!  I'd love to see your old Throwback Thursday photos!!

Juicy

It seems like everywhere I look, someone is trying to sell their "health shakes" or "lose weight fast" pills and supplements.  Whether it's the endless barrage of weight loss ads in commercials or infomercials or my old classmates and friends on Facebook, it seems like everyone is trying a new fad diet, a new shake or a new meal supplement program....and according to them, only their diet works.  Funny how according to the ads, nothing else works but the one specific product the person uses.  Don't get me wrong, I'm sure many of them have really lost weight due to the programs they are on mixed with a diet and exercise regime.  I'm not cutting them down at all.  In fact, I applaud them for making healthy changes for their lives.

As far as weight loss pills, supplements and lose weight fast schemes, I've tried them all.  Some gave me the results I wanted but they were short lived.  You see, the problem with a lot of the diets or supplements is that as soon as you stop doing it or stop taking the pills or drinking the shake, your body goes into shock and you gain some if not more weight back than you lost in the first place.

My most recent flirtation with diet pills and "weight loss systems" left me $200+ short and it didn't work.  To be fair, I didn't do all of the things that the system said to do.  They had pills for 5 times a day, a yucky shake and you can only eat 500 calories today and very few if any carbs.  Yeah.  I didn't know before I bought it that the system was basically the Atkins method with pills.  Honestly, if you're eating only 500 calories a day, you're going to lose weight regardless of what supplements you take.  I stopped the system because it was such a waste of money and time.

I'm what you would call overweight.  Not morbidly obese or anything but I'm a plus sized gal and I don't have a problem with it other than the health risk involved.  I don't come from a family known for their longevity.  I have high blood pressure, heart and other issues on both sides of my family tree so I really have to get it together now while I'm still relatively young so that I can live a long and full life and not leave my son an orphan.

No meal replacement or supplement can make up for good old fashioned exercise.  Getting out there and sweating is really the best way to not only lose weight but to flush your body of toxins as you sweat and get your blood pumping which strengthens your heart and lungs.  You just have to make sure you're well hydrated and working out in a heart rate bracket that's healthy for you.

Anyway, I've gone off on a tangent and I actually had a point.  After my most recent failed attempt to try the newest lose weight fast fad, I was in my kitchen thinking and gazing off in the distance.  I happened upon the Jack LaLane juicer that was sitting in the corner that I never used.  I had all this fruit and all these veggies I was growing in my garden, why not give it a shot?  Turns out, juicing is awesome.  Yes I said it.  I love juicing.  In fact, I've blended some pretty nasty stuff together like spinach, celery, beets, an apple and carrots and it turned out yummy!!  I've actually come up with my own concoctions that I prefer but all in all, juicing is my new favorite thing.  The concoction to the right is a mixture of spinach, beets, carrot, apple, and ginger.  Sounds yucky, tastes yummy.

I bought a book called "Juicing for Life" which has some good recipes and reasons for why juicing is beneficial to your health.  I don't follow the recipes all that often though.  I tend to take what I like from some recipes and make it my own.  It's so much fun to make use of veggies that might otherwise go bad sitting in the crisper.

The awesome part about juicing is that even though you're not getting the awesome ruffage that you get when you eat the whole veggies and fruits, you're getting all the nutrients and vitamins.  I feel more energetic and am in a better mood.  I also haven't been craving as many carbs as I used to which is awesome because I am a carb addict!!  I actually haven't done much to change my eating habits other than my portions are smaller because I'm full from the juice and my cravings aren't as strong as they used to be.  Win win if you ask me!

Anyway, I just wanted to share my new favorite healthy tip.  I'm only a month in it now and I have upgraded my Jack LaLane juicer (which was really old and not working quite right) to a Brevia one.  It really doesn't matter which one you have though as long as it makes juice.  If you think about it, spending $100-$200 a month on a juicer isn't all that bad because it's a one time charge whereas buying weight loss pills or diet systems is a recurring monthly charge ranging anywhere from $50- $400 a month.  If you go to farmer's markets or to places like Costco, you can get your fruit for cheap!! Added plus is that you're not going to be as hungry so your food costs go down and you're getting a lot more natural vitamins an nutrients than you were before.

I usually have a juice for breakfast (sometimes with some oatmeal yum!) and then a regular lunch and juice for an afternoon snack which keeps me full so I eat less dinner.  Sometimes I even juice in lieu of dinner and I wake up feeling awesome the next morning.

Do any of you juice?  Have any of you tried it?  What are your thoughts/opinions on juicing?  Have you had any positive or negative experiences?  Share your experiences with me!!!

I hope you all are having a wonderful Wednesday.   xoxo

Wordless Wednesday

Just a quick Wordless Wednesday Post.  These are photos of various plants and flowers that I have growing in my yard and garden.  I was feeling creative and decided to take photos with my 50mm lens and nothing else and since I was waiting for other work to download, I decided to photograph plants at random from my back yard.  I'm not normally the kind of person to use primes and nothing else.  In fact, I usually have a zoom lens living on my camera 90% of the time.  I just like the versatility of having the zoom.  Regardless, this was fun and challenging for me which is always a good thing.

Here are some of the cherry tomatoes I'm growing in my garden and a little bit of basil.

Added bonus, a photo taken with my iPhone 4 of a coconut tree in my neighbor's yard.  I just liked the clouds yesterday evening so I took a quick snap.

Hope you all are having a wonderful Wednesday!!

xoxo

School bullies and other morons.

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

Today started off like any other school day.  My son got ready for school and brushed his teeth and washed his face (which is an event because if he had his way, he never would) and then got his supplies ready and put on his shoes.  As he was tying his basic Converse Chuck Taylors (the black shoes in the center of the photo), I asked him why he was wearing those again and not the high top red or green ones.  My son Alaka'i really wanted the high tops initially which is why I purchased them for him along with a new pair of Chuck Taylors.  He told me that some boy at school, let's just call the boy Kasey, told him that the green camo pattern (Alaka'is favorite) were "retarded and ugly".  Alaka'i and I sat and had a long talk about how he should wear something because he likes it and not to let what other people, especially bullies think or say influence him otherwise.  We talked about how sometimes people say mean things because they are jealous and wish they had something that you own or because they're simply mean.  What really impacted Alaka'i was when I told him that if I went to school and offered "Kasey" a pair of the green camo shoes, I guarantee he'd want them.  Needless to say that after our conversation, he laced up his green camo Converse high top sneakers and walked to the car with a smile on his face.

My son Alaka'i is no stranger to bullying either.  This is not his first time at the rodeo but my sweet boy knows that even if someone hits him or says something mean to him, it's not an excuse for him to hit back or say something equally mean or lame back to them.  I told him to either let the teacher know or let me know and we'd handle it.  The bullies are lucky he's so passive and nice because my boy is tall for his age and towers over most of his classmates.  If he were to let his rage take over, he would knock that brat out.  Luckily he listens to my instructions and doesn't do anything because fighting solves nothing.  I told him that he should stand up for himself and tell the bully to cut it out and that if it persists, let me know.

I'd be lying if I said that I didn't have some choice words for that little putz "Kasey".  I'd love to sling some expletives and cut downs his way.  It's hard to not revert to my old habits and my sharp tongue because it had gotten me through being bullied in high school but it also backfired and I got a reputation in school for being mean because of it.  I wasn't a Christian then either so now I really have to watch my words and my actions and do what is right.  I don't want to teach my son the wrong way, I want him to know how to act and how to do the right thing from the start so he doesn't have to correct any bad habits when he gets older like I do.

Bullies have always been around.  I myself have been a victim of bullying in elementary school, so bad at one point that I got beat up and became a loner because of it.  In high school there were cliques and some bullying but by then I had toughened up so I would shoot the cut downs right back at them.  Did it solve anything? No.  I just for the life of me can't understand why some kids feel the need to cut others down to feel more important.  Then again, bullying isn't exclusive only to children.  In fact, adults bully each other just as much if not more than children.  I think that it hurts more when you're a child because you're not jaded and haven't had the chance to develop thick skin.  When you're a child you just want to fit in and be liked and accepted.  You don't want to be made to feel bad or left out.  That's why I believe it's important to give my son a strong sense of self so he doesn't bend his ways and shift his morals to fit in with the crowd.  Even with that strong sense of self and a positive self-image, it still stings to get cut down.

Bullies are cowards and morons.  If they had brains or real guts, they'd find a better way to get attention than to cut someone else down.  Then again, you have to wonder what they have or are enduring at home to bring out this angry and bullying nature.  I know my bullies were cut down regularly by their parents and I know others who lived in homes with a lot of fighting and violence and bullying between parents that they witnessed.  I feel bad for bullies because they act that way either due to a bad home life or due to a lack of intelligence.  Either way it's a losing situation.  Having a bad home life is no excuse to be mean, rude or violent towards anyone.  If they can't find constructive ways to channel that anger, it will just lead to their demise.  A bully's worst enemy is the person they look at when they glance in the mirror.

It's so hard as a parent seeing your child bullied or cut down.  I want so badly to protect him and shield him but I can't do that 24/7.  I never truly grasped how hard being a parent is.  You think when you're pregnant that it will be this adorable dream and it gets progressively harder as they age.  I used to think that the hardest part would be all the work taking care of a newborn but it's not.  That was fun.  The hardest part is watching your child go out into the world and knowing they will be exposed to things and people you would not allow them to see or be associated with if they were with you.  That's why it's so important to talk with your children and have that open line of communication with them so that they're not afraid to come to you with anything.

Mama Mondays

Just looking at old pictures of me and my son Alaka'i when he was a baby.  I can't believe he's 10 and about to end 4th grade already!!! Time flies.  The photo above was from his first visit to the zoo when he was about 9 months old and I had just chopped off all my hair.  Wow, I do not look good in short hair!! haha

I hope my son grows to be a Godly, good man.  Lord knows that I have my flaws but I try so hard to teach him to be honest and to always do what is right, no matter how hard it is.  God protect him and keep him close to you!!!  I am so thankful that I am blessed with such an amazing son.  I just pray that he stays strong in his faith and allows Jesus to lead him in his life.

Even on my worst day, even when he's grumpy or bratty, he lights my life up with pure joy.  This picture is of my boy just a week ago.  Love my son!!

He looks so much like my little brother Peter and my dad.  He even acts like them. It's so cute to watch them all interact.  My brother and I had a blast growing up.  Love this picture with him and my mama!!!

Be good to your mamas everyone!! I am so thankful to have mine still alive and in my life.  She almost died of lung cancer 3 years ago and she's fully healed now, Praise Jesus!!

I hope you all have a wonderful week with those you love.  Tell them you love them, even if they already know.  If you have loved ones that you aren't on good terms with, write them a note or call them and mend that bridge!!  You don't want to wait until it's too late and wish you always had made up with them.

xoxo,

Jean
